REFERRAL NOTICE:
Kalesnikoff Lumber Co. Ltd. is Advertising Forest Stewardship Plan 597 Term 2021-2026
Kalesnikoff Lumber Company (KLC) is asking for public comments on their recent draft Forest Stewardship Plan #597 (FSP) 2021 to 2026. This is the only industry document that the community can legally comment on and have those comments considered.
The comments provided are considered by KLC and are included in the Comments Section of their finalized FSP. Although there are cut block maps and more information available, these details are not included in the FSP, as it is solely a landscape level plan.
Comments, opinions and concerns about the FSP and/or the proposed logging in the Glade community and watershed can be sent to referrals@kalesnikoff.com. For concerns to be reflected in the final submission of the FSP, Kalesnikoff encourages written submissions by February 15, 2021.

Kalesnikoff Lumber Company's
Proposed Logging
See HERE to see 'KLC Updates'
Kalesnikoff Lumber Company initially commissioned Terrain Stability mapping for Glade Face (South), Goose Creek and Hall Creek and Terrain Stability Mapping of Glade Creek and Gander/McDermid Creek in March of 2007. In 2015 they began flagging in Glade Creek Watershed without notifying residents. |
TAKE Action!
Although government legislation expects the logging companies to consider cumulative effects in their objectives, the industry no longer has to plan out their cut blocks in advance. The method they now use is to plan a couple of cut blocks, then do a couple more, and a couple more, etc. So although we are presented with the information for three blocks (and now a fourth), keep in mind that there are more cut blocks to come.

Proposed Cut blocks in Glade Watershed (Mar 2018, 2019):
KLC has three cutblocks planned for Glade Creek Watershed. One is completely within our watershed, the other two are about 50% and 60% within Glade Watershed. The contour maps are below, edited to show Glade Watershed boundaries, which are not included on the KLC website. Update 2020: They have another cut block planned above the community in North Glade, maps will be coming soon.
KLC estimates that they would harvest 350 logging truck loads from cut blocks 3 and 4. That is 700 trucks going through our small community and up Glade Ferry Rd. KLC mill processes about 35 truck loads a day. That means Glade timber, all 350 truckloads, would be processed in 10 - 11 days. These are trees that took 80 to 120 years to grow, that are an integral part of the Glade watershed, and could be for many years to come...

Their cutting boundaries include, or are in and around:
Their cutting boundaries include, or are in and around:
- the Glade Waterfall
- the path that leads into the woods: Skattebo Trail, their boundary appears to cross this path
- the Glade Irrigation water intake
- the convergence of the North and South Fork as it goes to our water intake
- some roads in Upper Glade area
- both side of the hydro lines: ie above and below the hydro lines
- the hillside that faces Glade community
- the North end of Glade: it appears to cross the Ward Ferry Trail
Glade Creek Watershed as seen from Hwy 3a. The blue building is part of Kalesnikoff's lumber yard. So from their lumber yard across the Kootenay River, they can see our watershed.
The noise from their lumberyard carries down the hill and across the river to Glade. Vibration that shakes residents' windows, the loud noise of logs dropping, and the whine of machinery. It has been the source of numerous complaints, and although Kalesnikoff has tried to 'mitigate' the noise; it unfortunately still carries on today. |
March 2016: The 5 year Forest Stewardship Plan March 2016. On page 43 they have a list of complaints received from members of the public. There are 110 complaints concerning 'quantity and quality of water'. However, the Kalesnikoff Plan states that these numbers are "biased due to a petition received from Glade residents" concerning development in their watershed. |
